Jacobs Creek Double Barrel Wine

June 13, 2018

Jacobs Creek has been producing high calibre wine since 1847. Their winemaking journey began when Johann Gramp planted his first vineyard, along the banks of Jacobs Creek, with the desire to showcase the exemplary grapes and exceptional land. This vision has inspired how Jacobs Creek wine reveals the unique effect of the Australian sun on each grape variety. With over 160 years of winemaking experience, it is no surprise that Jacobs Creek is Australia’s largest wine brand.

Jacobs Creek has a wide variety of wines on offer. With twelve signature ranges, you are sure to find the perfect glass. However, if you are looking for something a little more out of the ordinary, you can’t look past the Jacobs Creek Double Barrel Range.

Jacobs Creek Double Barrel extends upon their process of crafting beautifully rich red wines to create new depths of complexity. Firstly, the wine is aged in American and French oak barrels. After winemakers are satisfied with the taste, the wine is then transferred into aged whiskey barrels to add subtle toasty notes to create a smoother and rounder wine.

Using perfectly aged Scotch and Irish whiskey barrels winemakers are able to create deep and full-bodied wines. Whiskey barrels have narrower staves that traditional wine barrels. This allows for an increase of oxygen to flow through the wine. This causes the tannins to soften and the true character of the wine is revealed. Each barrel has held spirits for eight to twenty years. The Irish Whiskey barrels, in particular, add aromatic herbs to the intense black fruit flavour.

About the Range

There are three varieties of wine on offer in the Jacobs Creek Double Barrel Range. The Shiraz uses rich, full-bodied grapes from the Limestone Coast. Aged to perfection in Scotch whiskey barrels, this 2012 Shiraz boasts rich dark fruit flavours. The excellent fruit quality has resulted in a great flavour that has aged beautifully with dense, plush tannins.

The Shiraz is perfect for drinking now. However, it has the potential to develop for up to ten years if cellared under ideal conditions. The beautiful aroma is reminiscent of lifted liquorice spice with Christmas cake fruits and cherry notes.  From your first sip, you’ll be able to taste the expertly balanced mixture of ripe dark fruits combined with the subtle toast and cedar complexity. Why not serve this beautiful vintage wine with marinated beef ribs for a perfect pairing?

The complex, ripe and layered Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with a roasted rack of lamb with chargrilled eggplant. Finished in aged Irish whiskey barrels, this Cabernet Sauvignon asserts power and complexity whilst showcasing the premium fruit. The tannins in this wine are evident at first, however, they quickly give way to a mid-palate filled with ripe cassis, olive tapenade and complex briary hints.  Finished in old Irish whiskey barrels that complement and enhance the elegance of the wine, the 2014 Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon has a beautiful complexity to it.

Aged in Scotch whiskey barrels, the Double Barrel Shiraz is complex, yet generous and smooth. The mix of the sweet red fruits and dark chocolate in this palate showcase the exemplary grapes of the Barossa Valley. The generous and full palate of the Shiraz compliments a pan-seared scotch fillet of beef. Engulf your senses in the beautiful aroma of lifted liquorice spice and dark plum accompanied by toasty notes.
